The Ledger: NFL Week 3

Posted by Andrew Zercie on September 30, 2009

Guess who's back...back again...

Guess who's back...back again...

Welcome to The Ledger. I didn’t have a stellar showing in week 3, but I am not afraid to acknowledge my mistakes when I make them. This week, there were plenty of mistakes to look back on, so without further ado…

Spread ‘Em: Week Three NFL Picks

Posted by Andrew Zercie on September 25, 2009

Remember the Titans?

Remember the Titans?

Week three is where things start to get interesting. Some of the 2-0 teams will be exposed as frauds, while teams that are 0-2 now may already be playing the most important game of their seasons. Also, in the minds of the players, coaches, and fans that follow teams, there’s a huge difference between 2-1 and 1-2. There’s a lot of season left, yet this week may tell a lot about what’s to come.

As always, I base my picks on flawed logic, personal opinion, age-old gambling trends, and matchups. If you’re looking for high-end analysis, this may not be the place to look for it.

Here now are the week three picks, with the home team in bold. Picks are for entertainment purposes only, of course. (Last week vs. spread: 12-4. Season record against the spread: 21-12)

The Ledger: NFL Week Two

Posted by Andrew Zercie on September 22, 2009

After a decent start to the season, week two proved to be a bonanza, if one were to use my picks, which were here:

Heir to Jeter's Throne? Already?

Heir to Jeter's Throne? Already?

Want to make money? Go 12-4 against the spread, like I did. It’s a great way to pick up a little extra cash.

This week’s Ledger will feature mucho self back-patting and kudos, and very little poking fun at awful picks. That’s the beauty of a 12-4 week. What follows is my attempt to encapsulate the week in NFL football, game by game (my picks are in parentheses).

Spread ‘Em: Week Two NFL Picks

Posted by Andrew Zercie on September 17, 2009

I had some good picks last week. Jake Delhomme didn't.

I had some good picks last week. Jake Delhomme didn't.

As I stated last week, picking against the spread in the first week of the season can be messy. However, I was fortunate to go 9-7. If one went with my picks, they would have come out a little bit ahead, which isn’t a bad way to begin the season.

Remember, I base my picks on flawed logic, personal opinion, age-old gambling trends, and matchups. If you’re looking for high-end analysis, look elsewhere.

Here now are the week two picks, with the home team in bold. Picks are for entertainment purposes only, of course.

Sunday

Atlanta (-6.5) over Carolina

I usually don’t let one performance sway me this much, but after last week’s debacle, Carolina QB Jake Delhomme has thrown nine interceptions in his last two games. I know their running backs offer them a chance to compete in most games, but until Delhomme stops throwing the ball to the other team, I won’t pick the Panthers. It’s as simple as that.

Atlanta, 27-17

The Ledger: NFL Week One

Posted by Andrew Zercie on September 15, 2009

Making predictions can be a messy business, but I’m not going to shy away from my mistakes. I made quite a few in week one of the NFL season. I’m not afraid to admit it.

Bengals Got Stoked

Bengals Got Stoked

Moving ahead to week two, however, can’t happen until I hold myself accountable for my erroneous picks, and pat myself on the back here and there for the games that worked out in my favor.

Here is  The Ledger, where I briefly run down each game from the past week in the NFL (my picks are in parentheses).

Spread ‘Em: Week One NFL Picks

Posted by Andrew Zercie on September 8, 2009

With the NFL season about to begin, I wanted to pay homage to one of the two reasons why millions of people purchase the Direct TV NFL Sunday Package: gambling (the other is fantasy football tracking).

I base my picks on flawed logic, personal opinion, age-old gambling trends, and matchups. If you’re looking for high-end analysis, look elsewhere.

Picks are for entertainment purposes only, especially in week one, when it’s easy to use last year’s trends to dictate which teams one picks early in the season.

Thursday Night

Pittsburgh (-6) over Tennessee

In 2004, the NFL began a new tradition in which the defending Super Bowl champion hosted the first game of the season on a Thursday night. In that time, the defending champs have gone 5-0, and only once (2004, when New England defeated the Colts, 27-24) was the final margin of victory less than 10 points.

This game will be competitive, but the Steelers will get a touchdown late and pull away.

Pittsburgh, 24-13

It’s easy to plunk down $4 or $5 for the latest NFL preview magazine and read 66 pages of scouting reports and predictions for the upcoming season that will ultimately be wrong.

What I provide, in 17 syllables per team, is levity, brevity, and spot-on predictions. All for free!

Without further ado, my NFL Preview, in haiku!
